"My day taking photos by Julie Johnson aged 34 and a half:
I bought a camera 2 years ago with the intention of becoming a master
photographer, but as time went by, the myriad of buttons continued to
confuse me despite the 'clear and concise' instruction manual. Finally,
after photographing the same stone wall several times with hardly a change
in the picture I realised I would need to have some proper education and
guidance on what my camera and I could do together. I emailed Camille and
requested urgent help (I'd waited 2 years, so the urgency was necessary!)
and fortunately as is wasn't wedding season, Camille was available.
The day began with an overview of my camera, it's buttons, the basics of
photography, F stops and shutter speeds and randomly the importance of the
size of donuts (I'll explain the donuts later). We then ventured out into
the world and started taking pictures. This gave Camille the ideal
opportunity to understand my level of understanding of both my camera and
photography. It was nerve-wracking for me as a novice to be watched like
this, but Camille was patient and thorough and clear with her instructions
and expectations.
This approach carried on through the rest of the day with plenty of
opportunities to quiz and be quizzed on photos, how to correct or improve
them, looking out for patterns in the architecture and world around us.
The day was invaluable in helping me to understand that it's generally a
combination of changing something around the composition, the light, the
subject matter and the confidence to try different things.
I had a lot of fun, ate a lot of cake, took loads of photos and some which
I am really quite proud of. I cannot recommend this workshop enough, I now
know the larger the aperture number equals the smaller the aperture donut
which means the lower the amount of light on the exposure and the impact
this has on the depth of field. This is a huge step in the right direction
for me! "
